Google Review : "In the end I came away with a car that's just perfect for me. I will be keeping a keen eye on the cars they have in the future."

Audi Coupe S2 quattro Turbo 20V, 75K miles, 1991

Launched in 1990, and with first UK deliveries in 1991, the turbocharged four-wheel drive Audi S2 was the replacement for the original quattro. So it had a lot to live up to. It was based on the B3 Coupe, and powered by the brilliant 2.2-litre 20V five-cylinder engine used in the Audi 200 and run-out quattros. Original power output was 217bhp, which was enough to push the new coupe to almost 150mph.

The original Ur-quattro proved to be such a success that by 1987, there was a four-wheel-drive version of every model in Audi’s line-up. And by 1993, one in 12 customers purchased an all-wheel-drive Audi. A success but making them rare then and even rarer today, particularly in early S2 Coupe form.

In the early 1990s, the biggest draw for quattro fans was the S2, which arrived in 1991. It was the flagship of the Audi 80-derived coupé range, and the first production car to wear the S badge.

The logo was made famous by the mighty World Rally-winning S1 competition car, and has adorned performance Audis ever since. The S2 Coupe 2.2-litre, five-cylinder engine can trace its roots back to the Sport quattro, and original cars produced 220bhp with a five-speed manual gearbox.

With its two-door coupe body, the S2 was the spiritual successor to the original Ur-quattro after the final version of the rally legend rolled off the production line in 1991. Clean styling ensured it looked far more modern, and it provided much improved refinement. However, there was some criticism of the design as it was seen to lack the muscle and aggression of the original car. In no way could the S2 be dismissed as flawed, but any car following in the footsteps of the Ur-quattro had an awful lot to live up to. Only later was it realised what a fantastic car the S2 was and is in its own right and it much easier to live with if driving one on the roads today.

Inside, the upright windscreen pillars seem close to the driver compared to more modern machinery, but visibility is excellent and despite tight rear legroom, this is a genuine four-seater. Elsewhere you can see the beginnings of Audi’s now famed interior quality. The S2 brought the Audi performance recipe bang up to date and proved the performance quattro was here to stay – history has shown the Coupe S2 to be one of the greatest Audi quattros.

We present here a rare and early example, especially in terms of its unmolested originality which sees only the exhaust having been changed from the original specification, the highly regarded Scorpion system having been fitted by a previous owner during his 12 years of ownership probably in the late 1990s. It works really well with no resonance or boom and is as close to factory as we could imagine. The car has covered only 75K miles having been laid up and carefully stored since 2011, the striking Laser Red paintwork showing no sign of fading.

H434MLJ is one of the first UK delivered 3B models in the LY3H launch colour Laser Red paintwork with contrasting quattro script Jacquard Satin interior and the rare (and expensive at the time) option of air-conditioning whilst also fitted with a electric sunroof.

Delivered new on 2nd May 1991 this is not a car that looks nearly 30 years old in terms of either design or condition.

The original owner travelled from Gloucestershire to the Mann Egerton Audi dealership in Christchurch, Dorset as he no doubt struggled to secure early delivery from a more local dealer as demand outstripped supply for this highly anticipated model.

Service History is as follows :

  • First service was carried out on 25th March 1992 at 10,232 miles at the more local Bristol Audi dealership who also completed a 12 month inspection on 3rd June 1992 at 11,338 miles.

  • By this time the car was in the hands of its second keeper in Scotland who would own the car until 2008 and 63,000 miles replacing brakes, discs, radiator and timing-belt and fitting the full Scorpion exhaust towards the end of ownership and prior to sale.
  • 20th January 1997 Inspection service with additional operations (Spark Plugs, Air Filter etc.) was carried out at 34,292 miles.
  • 24th September 1997 Inspection and Oil Service at 37,279 miles.

  • 6th June 2009 Inspection service with additional operations (Spark Plugs, Air Filter etc) was carried out at 68.834 miles.
  • 25th June 2009 MOT at 69,715 miles

  • 24th February 2011 MOT at 75,356 miles (handbrake and wheel bearing and several other issues were addressed).
  • Around this point in time it is believed that the then owner sadly died and the S2 passed to his son.

The car then changed hands between several collectors and was laid up in storage before arriving here at Classic Modern Cars.
